Complete Ayurveda for IBS Course

Part 3:
Are You a Vata, Pitta, or Kapha? (And What It Means for Your IBS)

Why Do IBS Symptoms Look So Different for Everyone?

Why is one person constantly bloated while another can’t stay out of the bathroom? Why do some people get constipated from the same food that gives others diarrhea?

The answer lies in the doshas—Ayurveda’s way of understanding your unique mind-body type.

In this lesson, we’ll explore the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and how they shape the way IBS shows up in your body. This is where things start to really click.

🌿 What Are the Doshas?

In Ayurveda, the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are biological forces that influence every system in your body. Think of them as your body’s operating system, managing everything from digestion and circulation to your energy and emotions.

When your doshas are balanced, you feel energized, clear-headed, and healthy. But when they’re out of balance? That’s when things like IBS and other health issues creep in.

Let’s break them down:

🌬️ Vata Dosha (Air + Ether)

Qualities: Light, dry, cold, rough
Healthy Mind: Creative, adaptable, energetic
Out of Balance: Anxious, forgetful, restless
Healthy Body: Slim, quick metabolism, active
Out of Balance: Gas, bloating, constipation, insomnia, dry skin

Vata-Type IBS is typically IBS-M (Mixed)—alternating constipation and diarrhea due to irregular motility. One minute everything’s rushing through, the next? It’s stuck.

🔥 Pitta Dosha (Fire + Water)

Qualities: Hot, sharp, light, oily, intense
Healthy Mind: Focused, driven, intelligent
Out of Balance: Irritable, judgmental, angry
Healthy Body: Moderate build, strong digestion, radiant skin
Out of Balance: Diarrhea, heartburn, inflammation, skin rashes

Pitta-Type IBS is typically IBS-D (Diarrhea). The fire is too strong—think “melting” digestion. Your body is literally trying to cool itself down by eliminating quickly.

🌎 Kapha Dosha (Earth + Water)

Qualities: Heavy, slow, cool, smooth, dense
Healthy Mind: Calm, loyal, supportive
Out of Balance: Lethargic, stubborn, depressed
Healthy Body: Strong, smooth skin, good immunity
Out of Balance: Constipation, weight gain, sluggishness, mucus

Kapha-Type IBS is typically IBS-C (Constipation). The elements of earth and water slow everything down—like mud or cement in your gut.

🧠 How to Spot Your Imbalance

Some of these sound familiar? You might even see parts of yourself in two of the doshas—that’s totally normal.

Your doshic balance shifts throughout your life, depending on stress, diet, seasons, and lifestyle. The key is learning how to recognize the signs of imbalance and course-correct.

🧭 Why This Matters for Healing IBS

When you know your dosha, you start to understand:

  • Why certain foods feel like your enemy

  • Why the same treatment doesn’t work for everyone

  • How to choose the right herbs, foods, and habits for you

Your IBS might have the same label as someone else’s—but the root cause (and solution) is entirely different.
