Complete Ayurveda for IBS Course
Part 2:
The Ayurvedic Approach to IBS
What If the Real Cause of IBS Isn’t What You’ve Been Told?
Most people are taught to treat IBS by managing symptoms—fiber, probiotics, cutting foods, or taking medications. But what if the real path to healing is something deeper?
Ayurveda offers a radically different approach to digestive health—one that focuses on restoring your body’s natural function, not just masking symptoms. In this lesson, we’ll explore the foundational Ayurvedic view of digestion and how imbalances in your system create the chaos you’ve been living with.
🔥 Agni & Ama: The Cornerstones of Digestion
In Ayurveda, your digestive health comes down to the balance between two key forces:
Agni – your digestive fire.
Agni is your body’s ability to transform food into nutrients, energy, and tissue. With strong agni, digestion flows smoothly and most diseases are kept at bay.
Think of it as your internal kitchen—when it’s burning clean it produces clean fuel and everything works better.
Ama – toxins from poor digestion.
When digestion is weak or incomplete, leftover food matter turns into ama—sticky, toxic sludge that clogs up your system and spreads imbalance throughout the body.
Ama is the root of many diseases in Ayurveda—especially digestive ones like IBS.
So your healing journey? It’s ALL about stoking your agni and clearing out ama.
⚖️ IBS = Imbalance in the Doshas
Alongside agni and ama, Ayurveda teaches that IBS is also the result of imbalance in the doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each one governs different bodily functions, including digestion.
Vata: responsible for movement (think: gas, bloating, irregularity)
Pitta: governs transformation (think: acid, inflammation, urgency)
Kapha: provides structure and stability (think: heaviness, sluggish digestion)
Depending on your dominant imbalance, your IBS will show up differently:
Vata-type IBS → alternating constipation/diarrhea, gas, irregular digestion
Pitta-type IBS → diarrhea, urgency, heartburn, skin issues
Kapha-type IBS → bloating, sluggishness, mucous in the stool
No two people are the same—and that’s the point. Your treatment must match your unique doshic picture.
🌿 Ayurveda = Personalized Medicine
This is where Ayurveda shines: Instead of one-size-fits-all solutions, it takes your whole life into account:
Your digestion (agni)
Your toxic load (ama)
Your dosha constitution and imbalances
Your lifestyle, stress, sleep, emotions, and more
Even if your diet looks “healthy” on paper, the real issue might be elsewhere.
That’s why I’ve never given two clients the same protocol. Every person’s path to healing is as unique as their story.
✨ Coming Up Next:
In the next lesson, we’ll take a deeper dive into the three doshas—how they work, how they go out of balance, and how you can bring them back into harmony for better digestion and better health.
If you’re ready to understand your body on a whole new level, you’re going to love it.
